Hershenson, Carter, Scott and McGee, P.C. is the oldest Vermont law firm in the Upper Valley of the Connecticut River.

photograph of Peter H. Scott and P.Scott McGee Throughout its history, the firm has played an important role in the development of major businesses in the Upper Valley. Notable among them is the Quechee Lakes Company, the developer of the Quechee Lakes second-home resort, the first real estate development to achieve approval under Vermont's Act 250. In 1973, the founding partner of the firm began to serve as Vermont counsel for the original developer. The firm has continued to serve as counsel to successive developers of the resort ever since, and Quechee Lakes is now the largest second-home resort development in New England.

An example is Long Trail Brewing Company, one of Vermont's best known brewers of beers and ales, which the firm represented at its founding and continues to represent in its permitting and real estate-related matters. The firm also represents Bethel Mills, Inc., a family lumber and building materials supplier that has been doing business in Vermont for over 220 years; Blue Sky Restaurant Group, which owns and operates two major restaurants—Jesse’s and Molly’s—in Hanover and West Lebanon, New Hampshire; area family service organizations and private agencies serving persons with disabilities, including The Family Place, Lincoln Street, Inc. and Upper Valley Services, Inc.; White Mountains Insurance Group, Ltd., a financial services holding company with primary business interests in property and casualty insurance and reinsurance, with its principal executive office in Hanover, New Hampshire; and Sno-Engineering, Inc. (SE Group), an international consulting firm recognized as an innovator and leader in the mountain resort industry.
